Delta faucet and shower repair

Quick answer: parts depend on the design.

Delta faucets come in several generations with different insides. Knowing which one you have makes a drip a quick fix instead of a guessing game. For homes in Pasadena, San Gabriel, Temple City and the rest of the SGV.

Several designs under one name

Older single-handle Delta faucets often use a ball design with rubber seats and springs underneath. Newer Delta faucets use cartridges. Two-handle Delta faucets use stems or cartridges on each side.

Delta shower valves come in their own families. The name on the handle is the same; the parts inside are not. That is why a photo of the faucet, and ideally of the part once removed, matters so much.

Seats and springs

On ball-style Delta faucets, a drip from the spout is often worn seats and springs, small rubber cups pressed by springs against the ball. A seat and spring kit is cheap and the repair is quick. A leak from under the handle usually means the cap or the O-rings need attention. These faucets reward repair because the parts are simple.

Cartridge faucets

Single-handle cartridge Delta faucets drip or stiffen as the cartridge wears. The cartridge is replaced as a unit. Some pull-down kitchen faucets also have a diverter or a docking magnet that can wear; the spray head and hose are sold separately.

Delta showers

Many Delta shower valves use a pressure-balancing cartridge. Symptoms of trouble include a shower that runs hot or cold suddenly, a handle that will not turn far enough for full heat, or a drip after shutoff. A limit stop on the cartridge sets the maximum hot temperature; if the shower never gets hot enough, adjusting that stop sometimes solves it without new parts. Delta’s site at deltafaucet.com has parts lookups by model.

Touch and touchless faucets

Some Delta kitchen faucets turn on with a touch or a wave. They use a solenoid under the sink and a battery pack or a plug-in adapter. When they stop working, fresh batteries are the first check. Solenoids and control boxes are sold as parts.

Repair or replace

If the faucet is sound and parts are on hand, repair. If the body is cracked, the finish is peeling, or you are changing the look of the kitchen, replace. See faucet repair or replace. For showers, see shower valve repair.

While we are under the sink

Faucet work often reveals tired shutoff valves and old supply lines. Replacing them in the same visit avoids a second trip. See replacing stuck shutoff valves.

Who we are

We work on Delta products as an independent local handyman, with no tie to Delta Faucet Company. Their customer service handles product coverage.

Identify your Delta before repair
  • One handle or two
  • A photo of the handle from the side
  • Any model number under the sink or in the manual
  • Where it drips: spout, handle or base
  • Shower: pressure-balance or thermostatic
  • Whether the trim was replaced before

Questions we ask before the visit

How old is the faucet, roughly? Does it drip from the spout, leak under the handle, or leak inside the cabinet? Is the hot side, the cold side or both affected?

Have you replaced anything already? Each answer narrows the parts list so the first visit is usually the last one for that faucet. A photo of the area under the sink helps too, since it shows the shutoff valves and supply lines.

A typical Delta visit

Most Delta calls start with a photo. A round knob on a single handle usually means a ball faucet; a lever with a hidden screw usually means a cartridge. We bring both seat-and-spring kits and the likely cartridge.

After shutting off the supply and opening the faucet, we lay a towel in the basin, take the handle apart in order on the counter, and replace worn pieces. Once reassembled, we run hot and cold, check for drips at the spout and under the handle, and look under the sink for any weeping at the supply connections.

Grit and new parts

New cartridges and seats wear quickly if sand or scale from old pipes reaches them. Running the water with the aerator removed for a minute flushes debris before the aerator goes back on. It is a small step that adds life to the repair.

Handle that wobbles

A loose Delta handle often has a set screw hidden under a small cap or behind the lever. Tightening it with the right hex key fixes many wobbles. If the handle adapter is stripped, a new handle kit is needed.

Low flow at one faucet

If one Delta faucet runs weakly while others are fine, the aerator at the spout tip is the usual culprit. Many Delta aerators unscrew by hand or with a small key. Cleaning or replacing it restores flow. Low flow at every faucet points to a house issue instead, such as a partly closed main valve or a failing pressure regulator.

Shower heads and hand showers

Delta also makes shower heads and handheld showers. Swapping a shower head is a simple job; a hand shower on a slide bar helps seniors and kids, and goes up on the same visit. See our grab bar page for safety add-ons.

Bar and prep sinks

Small bar faucets use the same families of parts as their larger cousins, just in tighter spaces. Access under a bar sink can be cramped, which is why these repairs sometimes take longer than the kitchen.
