Bradford White water heater service

Quick answer: check the air intake screen.

Bradford White tanks are often installed by plumbers rather than sold off the shelf, so you may have one without knowing the brand until the label is read. For homes in Pasadena, San Gabriel, Temple City and the rest of the SGV.

Bradford White sells mainly through plumbing wholesalers, so a tank put in by a plumber years ago may well be one. The rating label on the side lists model, serial, capacity and fuel. Bradford White’s site at bradfordwhite.com has manuals and a serial number guide for the manufacture date.

Sealed combustion chambers

Many Bradford White gas tanks have a sealed combustion chamber with a viewing window, rather than an open burner door. Lighting and servicing follow the instructions on the label closely; the pilot is often lit with a built-in igniter rather than a match. If the pilot will not stay lit, the cause may be the thermocouple, a dirty air intake screen at the base, or a tripped safety sensor.

Air intake screens

Lint, dust and pet hair clog the screen at the base of many sealed-chamber tanks. A clogged screen starves the burner of air and can shut it down. Vacuuming the screen is simple maintenance, especially for heaters in garages and laundry areas. If the safety sensor has tripped, the maker’s manual covers what must be checked before relighting.

Status lights on newer controls

Newer Bradford White gas controls have a status light that blinks codes. Counting the blinks and checking the chart on the unit tells us where to look. We replace failed parts with matching ones.

Electric models

Electric tanks have two elements and thermostats with a high-limit reset. We test with the power off and swap failed parts like-for-like.

Flushing and drain valves

Sediment collects in any tank. Draining a few gallons regularly, or a full flush, keeps the burner or lower element working efficiently. See sediment flushing. If the drain valve leaks after use, we replace it.

Replacement scope

When a Bradford White tank leaks from the body or is near the end of its life, we replace it like-for-like on existing connections: new connectors, straps and a relief valve. Since this brand is sold mainly through wholesalers, a homeowner may find it easier to choose a comparable tank from another maker. Moving the heater or changing fuel is not work we take on. See water heater repair and replacement.

Clearances and closets

Water heaters need room around them for air and service. Storage boxes stacked against a tank, or a closet door that seals tight, can starve the burner. Clearing space is a free fix. We also check the vent connection at the top looks secure and point out anything that looks unsafe.

A typical Bradford White visit

You report the water heater pilot went out and will not relight. We ask for photos of the label and the window area. On site we check the intake screen first, clean it, then follow the label’s relighting steps.

If the pilot will not hold, we test the thermocouple and replace it. Before leaving we run the hot water and watch a full burner cycle through the window.

Independent service

Bradford White has no connection to us; we service its water heaters on our own as a local handyman. Coverage questions are for the maker.

Rumbling and slow recovery

Sediment in the bottom of the tank insulates water from the burner, so it heats slower and makes noise. Draining a few gallons from the drain valve until it runs clear, every so often, keeps that layer thin. Heavy buildup in an older tank may not come out fully even with a flush.

Relief valve testing

The relief valve can be tested by lifting its lever briefly, with a bucket under the discharge pipe. If it does not reseat and keeps dripping afterward, it gets replaced. We also check the discharge pipe runs down to a safe spot, not up or into a closed space.

Temperature settings

Bradford White gas controls have a dial with marked positions rather than numbers on many models. The manual gives approximate temperatures for each. Setting it at a moderate position balances comfort, safety and energy use.

Hot water in a hurry

If the tank is leaking and you need hot water while waiting for a replacement, shutting off the cold supply at the top limits how much water reaches the floor. Shut off the gas or the breaker to the heater too. Then send us photos and we plan the swap.

Vacation mode

Many Bradford White gas controls have a vacation setting that keeps the pilot lit but holds the water at a low temperature while you are away. Using it on long trips saves gas without the trouble of relighting. Turn it back to the normal mark a few hours before you get home so the tank is hot when you walk in.

Thermocouple versus thermopile

Some models use a thermocouple to sense the pilot; others use a thermopile that also powers the control. They look similar but are not interchangeable. We match the part to the model on the label.
