Why placement matters

- Phone about the grab bar in open hours
Falls in the bathroom are common, and they often happen stepping in or out of the tub or getting up from the toilet. A bar is only useful where a hand naturally reaches. We talk with the person who will use it, have them mimic the motion, and mark the spot. A bar placed by guesswork often ends up unused.
Common spots
- A vertical bar at the tub or shower entry for stepping in and out.
- A horizontal or angled bar on the long tub wall for sitting and standing.
- A bar beside the toilet, or a fold-down bar where there is no side wall.
- A bar in the shower near the controls.
- Hand rails at entry steps and short stair runs.
Anchoring is everything
A grab bar must hold a sudden, full-body pull. Towel bars and suction-cup bars are not made for that. We fasten bars into studs where possible.
Where studs are not in the right place, we use anchors made specifically for grab bars, rated for the load, through drywall or tile. Through tile, we drill slowly with a tile bit and seal each hole with silicone so water stays out of the wall.

Choosing a bar
Textured or knurled bars are easier to grip when wet. Diameters around 1-1/4 to 1-1/2 inches suit most hands. Lengths from 12 to 36 inches cover most spots. Finishes come in stainless, chrome, bronze and white to match existing fixtures, so safety does not have to look clinical.
Beyond the bar
A handheld shower on a slide bar, a shower seat, a raised toilet seat and a non-slip mat often go with grab bars. We can install the shower head and the slide bar on the same visit. Better lighting helps too; see vanity lights and motion night lights in halls.

For aging parents
Adult children often call us when a parent moves in or comes home from the hospital. We can visit, walk through the house with the family, and suggest a short list of changes: bars, rails, lever handles in place of knobs, and clear paths. See also our lever handle page.
Renters
Many landlords allow grab bars on request, and some cover the cost. Ask the owner; we can patch the holes later if the bars come down at move-out.

Fiberglass and acrylic tub surrounds
One-piece fiberglass or acrylic tub surrounds are thin, with a gap behind them. Bars there need anchors made for hollow walls, or blocking added behind the wall from an adjacent closet. We look at the wall before choosing the method, and we never rely on the plastic wall alone.
Seats and transfer benches
Shower seats can be fold-down units fastened into studs, or freestanding seats. A transfer bench helps someone sit outside the tub and slide in. We install fold-down seats and help set up freestanding gear.

Lighting the path
Many falls happen at night on the way to the bathroom. Plug-in motion night lights along the hall and in the bathroom help. Brighter bulbs in the bathroom fixture make edges and wet spots easier to see.

- Stud behind the tile

Door handles and thresholds
Lever handles are easier than knobs for weak hands. Low thresholds are easier to cross with a walker. We can swap handles and adjust thresholds during a grab bar visit.

Follow-up check
After a few weeks of use, a quick check of every bar for movement is wise. Bars into studs should not move at all.
Bars that look like fixtures
Some grab bars double as towel bars, toilet paper holders or shower shelves, rated for the same pull as a standard bar. They suit homes where the owner does not want an obvious safety look. We check the rating on the package before installing.

Entry steps and porches
A short rail at front or back steps helps everyone, not only older adults, especially in rain. Rails mount into the wall framing or into posts set beside the steps. We fit them at a comfortable height and make sure the ends turn in so sleeves do not catch.
A quick plan
Send photos of the bathroom walls and the steps, and a note about who will use the bars. We suggest placements before the visit.

- Mandarin Chinese
- Cantonese
We set heights to suit the person, not a default.
Showers with glass doors
A glass enclosure leaves less wall to work with. Bars go on the tile walls inside, placed so the door still swings and the user can reach the bar before stepping over the curb. We test the reach with the door open and closed.
Bars for kids and guests
Grab bars help kids stepping into a tub, guests in unfamiliar bathrooms, and anyone recovering from an injury. Many families install one at the tub entry as a basic safety step, without waiting for a need. It is a short job and works for everyone in the house.

Questions we get
Can you install a grab bar on tile?
Yes, drilled carefully and sealed.
What if there is no stud?
We use anchors rated for grab bars.
Can a towel bar work as a grab bar?
No. Towel bars are not made to hold a person.
- Valley-wide
- Grab bar jobs in houses and ADUs
Do you install hand rails?
Yes, at steps and short stairs.
Do you supply bars?
Yes, or we install ones you bought.
How high should a grab bar be?

Can you install a bar in a fiberglass shower?
Often, with anchors made for hollow walls and rated for grab bars, depending on the surround.

Good to fix along with the grab bar
Easy to add on the same trip: new deadbolts and door levers or vanity lights and LED mirrors. If the cause is elsewhere, see tub, shower and sink recaulking; shower cartridge replacement and childproofing and baby-proofing come up often too.
