Shelving and closet organizers

Quick answer: into studs, sized for load.

Load comes first

Shelf hardware
  • We pick up shelf parts
  • Your pick of model

Shelves fail when the load is underestimated. A shelf of books weighs far more than a shelf of decor. A garage shelf full of paint cans and tools is heavier still.

We ask what will go on each shelf and choose brackets, standards and fasteners to suit. For heavy loads, that means screws into studs, not drywall anchors alone.

Floating shelves

Floating shelves hide their support inside the shelf. They look clean but depend entirely on the hidden bracket and how it is fastened. We mount the bracket into studs wherever possible and check that it is level before the shelf slides on. Deep floating shelves for heavy items are less forgiving; for those, a visible bracket is often the better choice.

Closet systems

Wire systems, laminate systems and modular kits from home centers all install on a top rail or standards fastened to the wall. We plan the layout with you: double hanging rods for shirts and pants, a long rod for dresses and coats, shelves for folded items, and drawers or baskets where they fit. Kits ship with instructions that assume perfect walls; we shim and adjust to real walls so doors still close and drawers slide.

How heavy items stay on the wall
  1. Locate studsWood framing sits behind the drywall.
  2. Match the fastenersStuds first, rated anchors where needed.
  3. Mark it levelPencil the holes, then drill.
  4. Tug testMake sure it holds before loading it.

Garage storage

Garage walls in valley homes are often bare studs or drywall over studs. Heavy-duty standards and brackets screwed into studs carry tools, bins and sports gear. Overhead racks need to be fastened into ceiling joists and kept clear of the garage door track and opener. Freestanding steel shelves should be anchored to the wall so they cannot tip.

Earthquake anchoring

Tall bookcases, dressers and freestanding shelves can topple in a quake. Furniture straps or L-brackets into studs keep them upright. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s Anchor It! campaign at anchorit.gov covers tip-over risks for children, and anchoring pays off twice in earthquake country. Pantries and laundry rooms

Pantry shelves need to hold cans and jars without sagging, so we add supports along the back wall. Laundry rooms benefit from a shelf above the washer and dryer with a hanging rod beneath it for clothes straight from the dryer.

What to send

Photos of the wall or closet, the size, and the product you want or a description of what you need to store. We confirm the layout and give a price.

Measure before buying a kit

Closet kits come in fixed widths. Measuring the closet width, depth and height, and noting where the door opens and where light switches sit, helps you pick the right kit. We can measure and suggest a layout before you buy.

Kids’ closets that grow

Adjustable systems let rods move up as kids grow. Low rods and open bins work for young kids; later, rods go higher and drawers come in. Systems on wall standards make this easy.

Reach-in versus walk-in

Reach-in closets work best with the full width used: rods at both ends and shelves in the middle, or double rods across. Walk-ins have room for drawers, shoe shelves and long-hang sections. We plan around the doors so nothing blocks them.

Garages in valley summers

Garages get hot. Paint, adhesives and some batteries do not like heat. Keep those on lower, shaded shelves away from the water heater, and keep heavy items low on any shelving.

Plan the load first
  • What goes on each shelf: books, tools, clothes
  • Wall type: drywall, plaster or masonry
  • Stud locations on the wall
  • Shelf length and depth
  • Hang rods and their height
  • Floor-mounted or wall-hung system

Utility and pantry shelves

Wire shelving in pantries and laundry rooms is affordable and breathes well. A shelf liner keeps small items from tipping through the wires.

Floating desks and wall-mounted counters

  • Foothills to the 10
  • Shelf work for owners and renters

A wall-mounted desk saves floor space in small bedrooms. It is a shelf with a heavier load and a person leaning on it, so it needs strong brackets into studs and a top thick enough not to flex. We size it for a laptop, a monitor and an elbow.

Bathroom shelves

Over-toilet shelving and small wall shelves in bathrooms keep towels and supplies off counters. In wet spots, we use metal or sealed shelves and stainless screws so nothing rusts or swells.

Labeling and handoff

When a closet system is done, we leave the extra parts and the instruction sheet in a bag in the closet, so adding a shelf later is easy.

Linen closets

Linen closets often have fixed shelves set too far apart. Adding a shelf or two in between, or pull-out baskets on the lower shelves, doubles usable space for towels and sheets.

Wall types

Drywall over wood studs is the easiest wall for shelving. Plaster, block and tile need different anchors.

Shoe and accessory storage

Angled shoe shelves, tie and belt racks, and hooks on the back of closet doors use space that is otherwise wasted. Door-mounted racks need the door hinges to be solid; we tighten them while installing. Pull-down rods help reach high closet shelves without a step stool, useful for shorter adults and older parents.

Plan for the future

Leave a little open space in any closet layout. Needs change, and an empty shelf leaves room for them.
